Laser Hair Removal FAQs
Your Questions, Answered.
Everything you need to know about laser hair removal at LIV Laser + Aesthetics in Fort Lauderdale, from our technology and treatment results to preparation, safety, and aftercare.
Laser Hair Removal & Technology
Laser hair removal uses concentrated light energy to target melanin, the pigment found in hair. As the hair absorbs this energy, it converts to heat, helping damage the structures responsible for future hair growth.
Because hair grows in different stages, multiple treatments are necessary to target follicles during their active growth phase. Over time, this can lead to smoother skin and a significant reduction in unwanted hair.
LIV uses advanced multi-wavelength diode laser technology designed for long-term hair reduction.
Our technology incorporates three wavelengths—755 nm, 808 nm, and 1064 nm—each with different light absorption and penetration characteristics, allowing treatment to be tailored to a variety of skin tones and hair types.
The system features adjustable treatment settings and integrated contact cooling to help manage skin temperature and improve comfort throughout each session.
Every treatment is personalized based on individual skin characteristics, hair type, and treatment goals, with safety and precision at the forefront.
Laser hair removal is generally described as a warming or snapping sensation against the skin. Comfort levels vary depending on the treatment area, hair density, and individual sensitivity.
Our diode laser incorporates contact cooling technology to help manage skin temperature and improve comfort during treatment.
Shaving approximately 24 hours before your appointment also helps reduce excess surface hair that could absorb laser energy, potentially decreasing discomfort and irritation.
At LIV, treatments are personalized with comfort and safety in mind.
Our diode laser technology offers adjustable settings that may accommodate a wide range of skin tones, including deeper complexions.
However, not every client is a suitable candidate. Skin tone, recent sun exposure, hair characteristics, medications, and skin condition must all be considered.
We evaluate each client individually to determine whether laser hair removal is appropriate.
Laser hair removal works best on hair containing sufficient melanin to absorb laser energy.
Very light blonde, red, gray, and white hair typically respond less effectively and may not be suitable for laser treatment.
Hair color, thickness, and skin characteristics are evaluated before recommending treatment.
LIV offers laser hair removal for many areas of the face and body, including the upper lip, chin, neck, underarms, arms, legs, chest, abdomen, back, bikini line, and Brazilian areas.
Treatment suitability depends on the specific area, hair characteristics, and skin condition.

Results & Treatment Schedule
Laser hair removal provides long-term or permanent hair reduction rather than guaranteed complete removal of every hair.
Many clients experience a substantial decrease in hair growth, with remaining hair often becoming finer or less noticeable.
Hormonal changes and individual hair-growth patterns may influence long-term results, and occasional maintenance treatments may be needed.
Many clients require approximately 6–8 treatments, although some may need additional sessions.
The number of treatments depends on the area being treated, hair thickness, hair color, hormonal factors, and individual response.
Your treatment plan will be adjusted as your results are evaluated.
Smaller treatment areas, including certain facial areas, are commonly scheduled approximately every 4–6 weeks.
Larger body areas are often treated every 6–8 weeks.
Your recommended schedule may vary depending on the treatment area and your individual hair-growth cycle.
Some clients notice reduced hair growth after their first few treatments.
Treated hairs may begin shedding within the first one to three weeks following a session. This is part of the normal treatment process and should not be confused with new hair growth.
Results typically become more noticeable as you progress through your treatment series.
Yes. Hormonal conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can stimulate additional hair growth and influence long-term results.
Laser hair removal may help reduce unwanted hair associated with hormonal changes, but additional sessions or ongoing maintenance may be necessary.
Laser hair removal does not treat the underlying hormonal condition.
Preparation & Aftercare
Yes. Please shave the treatment area approximately 24 hours before your appointment, unless instructed otherwise.
Shaving removes hair above the skin while leaving the follicle intact beneath the surface, where the laser needs to target it.
Removing excess surface hair also helps reduce unwanted heat at the skin's surface, which can decrease discomfort, irritation, and the risk of burns.
Please arrive with clean, freshly shaved skin.
No. Waxing, tweezing, and threading remove hair from the follicle, reducing the target available to the laser.
Avoid these methods throughout your treatment series. Shaving is the preferred method of hair removal between appointments.
Recent tanning or sunburn can increase the risk of burns and unwanted pigmentation changes.
Avoid intentional tanning, tanning beds, and self-tanning products before your appointment. Please inform LIV about recent sun exposure, even if your skin does not appear sunburned.
Treatment may need to be postponed until your skin has returned to its usual condition.
Please arrive with the treatment area clean and free of makeup, deodorant, lotions, oils, fragrances, and other topical products.
These products may interfere with treatment preparation or contribute to skin irritation.
After laser hair removal, your skin may experience temporary redness, warmth, or mild swelling.
For a comfortable recovery:
- Avoid direct sun exposure and tanning. Protect exposed skin with broad-spectrum SPF 50+.
- Avoid hot showers, hot baths, and excessive heat for the first 24–48 hours.
- Avoid harsh exfoliants, retinoids, and fragranced products on the treated area until your skin has recovered.
- Avoid scrubbing, scratching, or unnecessary friction.
- After underarm treatments, avoid deodorant for approximately 24 hours or until irritation has resolved.
Cool compresses and gentle, fragrance-free moisturizers may help soothe the skin.
Follow your personalized aftercare instructions, and contact LIV if you experience an unexpected skin reaction.
Yes. Shaving is the preferred method of hair removal between sessions because it does not remove the hair from the follicle.
Wait until any redness or sensitivity has resolved before shaving.
Avoid waxing, tweezing, or threading during your treatment series.
We recommend avoiding strenuous workouts and excessive sweating for 24–48 hours after treatment.
Heat, sweat, and friction may irritate freshly treated skin.
Light activities in a cool environment are generally acceptable if your skin feels comfortable. Resume your regular exercise routine once redness and sensitivity have resolved.
We recommend waiting at least 48 hours before returning to hot Pilates, hot yoga, or Bikram yoga.
High temperatures, excessive sweating, and friction can aggravate recently treated skin and increase irritation.
If redness or sensitivity persists, allow additional recovery time before returning to heated fitness classes.
We recommend avoiding saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs, and other sources of intense heat for approximately 48 hours after treatment.
Heat may aggravate temporary redness, swelling, and sensitivity.
Resume these activities once your skin has recovered.
Safety & Suitability
Laser hair removal is an established cosmetic procedure when performed with appropriate equipment, training, and safety precautions.
Temporary redness, swelling, and discomfort are relatively common. Less common risks include burns, blistering, pigmentation changes, infection, and scarring.
At LIV, we assess treatment suitability individually and use appropriate laser safety precautions, including protective eyewear.
No. Laser hair removal should not be performed directly over tattoos or permanent makeup.
Laser energy may interact with tattoo pigment, potentially causing burns, skin damage, or changes to the tattoo's appearance.
Tattooed areas must be avoided during treatment.
As a precaution, LIV does not perform laser hair removal during pregnancy because available safety data are limited.
We recommend postponing treatment until after pregnancy and completing an individual assessment before resuming.
Yes. Some medications and medical conditions may affect skin sensitivity, healing, or treatment suitability.

Never stop or change a prescribed medication without consulting your healthcare provider.
Yes. By reducing hair growth, laser hair removal may help decrease the frequency of ingrown hairs and shaving-related irritation.
Results vary, and existing discoloration, scarring, or other skin concerns may require separate evaluation.
